Recap: Cartersville Hurricanes vs. Calhoun Yellow Jackets

Even though the Cartersville Hurricanes have not done well against the Calhoun Yellow Jackets recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Wednesday. Cartersville managed a 71-67 win over Calhoun. Having run the score up that high, both teams probably have some extra defensive drills coming up.

Cartersville's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Nas Bennett led the charge by scoring 19 points. Another player making a difference was Monte Tolbert, who dropped a double-double on 14 points and ten rebounds.

When it comes to explaining why Calhoun lost, one person who can't be blamed is Landon Chattam. Despite the final result, he scored 23 points along with eight rebounds. That's the first time this season that Chattam pulled down eight or more rebounds. Emaree Winston was another key contributor, dropping a double-double on 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Even though they lost, Calhoun were working as a unit and finished the game with 13 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Cartersville only racked up six assists.

Cartersville is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matchups, which provided a massive bump to their 7-10 record this season. As for Calhoun, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 6-9.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Cartersville will take on Woodland at 8:00 p.m. on Friday. Calhoun won't have much time to rest: their next match is against Hiram at 7:30 p.m. on January 18th. The timing is sure in Hiram's favor as the team sits on three straight wins at home while Calhoun has been banged up by three consecutive losses on the road.
