High school softball rankings: Roncalli cements status as No. 1 team in MaxPreps Top 25 after undefeated year, Indiana 4A title

Royals begin season as top team and go wire-to-wire with 33-0 year.

Roncalli (Indianapolis) will end where it started, ranked as the top high school softball team MaxPreps Top 25 rankings. The Royals (33-0) capped off an undefeated season beating Harrison 16-0 on a wet and rainy night on Saturday to take home not only an Indiana Class 4A state championship, but they secured a MaxPreps National Crown.

It helps when you have the top player in the country in Keagan Rothrock. The Florida commit struck out five of the first seven batters and 15 of the 24 batters she faced on 94 pitches. Rothrock, mixed in with an offense that pounded 18 hits in the state title game, and averaged almost 10 runs a game throughout the season, made a clear statement who's No. 1.

Ballard (Louisville, Ky.) can call themselves a state champion for the first time in school history. The Lady Bruins finished off a flawless 39-0 season on Sunday with a 3-2 win over Lexington Catholic. Pitcher Brooke Gray shut down the Lady Knights' hopes in the seventh with a 1-2-3 inning to cap off one of the most successful seasons of all-time in Kentucky history.

Another first, this time in Oregon, as Tigard (Ore.) captured its first state championship beating Oregon City 1-0. Florida State commit Makenna Reid not only made history for her school, but she also set a state record striking out 21 batters in 10 innings at Jane Sanders Stadium in Eugene. The Tigers join this week's rankings at No. 23.

Teams that do not enter results and statistical information to MaxPreps make forming the rankings and highlighting players much more difficult. An expanded MaxPreps Top 25 and All-America teams will begin to roll out next week. Email steve.montoya@cbsi.com with nominations.
