League recap: Joy Christian extends winning streak with victory over Joseph City

VI Section III (8 Man) recap Oct. 30, 2012

Joy Christian extended the longest winning streak in VI Section III (8 Man) this week by beating Joseph City, 74-24. This was the team's ninth consecutive win.

Bagdad and Mogollon played the most hotly contested game in the league this week, with Bagdad eventually emerging with a 25-24 victory.

Joy Christian's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Nick Henderson threw for 245 and six touchdowns and Trevor Deason had 150 yards receiving. On the ground Godfrey Mudavanhu chipped in 77 yards. Aaron Martin helped Joy Christian's passing attack out by catching eight balls for 48 yards.

Nick Smith provided a threat through the air and on the ground as Scottsdale Preparatory Academy fell to Valley Lutheran. He completed 29 passes for 283 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for 59 yards. Smith's favorite target this week was Ethan Wright, who caught nine passes for 139 yards.

The Spartans' Smith and Matt Munsil have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Smith has thrown for 2078 yards this season, while Munsil, a 6-foot-0 receiver, has 67 catches for 1245 yards. Daniel Lopez from Salt River leads the league in rushing with 1307 yards.

The marquee game in VI Section III (8 Man) this week will be the clash between Brian Cole's team and the Flames. The Eagles enters the game ranked first in the state, while Valley Lutheran ranks fifth.

In 149 carries Lorenzo Ruiz has accumulated 996 yard this year.

Entering into this week's contest against Bob Wolf's team, Henderson is short just 111 passing yards to break 2,000 on the season. So far this year, Henderson has thrown for 1889 yards with 37 touchdowns and one interceptions.

The Eagles took down the Wildcats 74-24 last week, the largest margin of any game. Henderson ran for 57 yards in the win.
