Softball Recap: Maricopa Triumphs

It may have taken eight innings to finish the job, but Maricopa ultimately got the result they hoped for on Tuesday. They narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past the Vista Grande Spartans 9-8. This was payback for the Rams, who suffered a 10-6 loss the last time these two teams met.

The team relied heavily on Alanee Calderon, who went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, four RBI, and two runs. Those four RBI gave her a new career-high. Madelyn Hunt also deserves some recognition as she hit her first triple of the season.

Maricopa was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .429. They are undefeated (8-0) when they post a batting average of .375 or better.

Maricopa has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five matches. That's provided a massive bump to their 12-10-1 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.8 runs over those games. As for Vista Grande, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost six of their last eight games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 7-13 record this season.

The teams didn't have to wait long for a rematch: Vista Grande beat Maricopa by a score of 7-6 on Thursday.
