Basketball Game Preview: Washburn Pirates vs. Gulf Breeze Dolphins

The Washburn Pirates and the Gulf Breeze Dolphins will round out the year against one another at at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Washburn has four straight victories, Gulf Breeze has 11 straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the court.

Washburn is headed in fresh off scoring the most points they have all season. The stars were shining brightly for them in a 66-50 win over Phelps on Saturday.

Saylor Clay was her usual excellent self, almost dropping a double-double on 25 points and nine rebounds. That's the most points she has posted since back in January. Hannah Williams was another key player, almost dropping a double-double on 17 points and nine rebounds.

Meanwhile, Gulf Breeze played a tough match on Tuesday in which they were outscored in every quarter. They had to suffer through a 49-10 loss at the hands of Pine Forest. The Dolphins were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 34-5.

Washburn pushed their record up to 10-2 with the victory, which was their fourth straight at home. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 57.0 points per game. As for Gulf Breeze, their loss dropped their record down to 1-12.

Washburn won a contest that couldn't have been any closer when the teams last played back in December of 2019, slipping by Gulf Breeze 42-41. Will Washburn repeat their success, or does Gulf Breeze have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
