The West Vigo Vikings will take on the Edgewood Mustangs at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (West Vigo 3.2, Edgewood 2.4) so any runs scored will be well earned.
West Vigo is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Indiana's top teams: Cascade, who was ranked 16th at the time (West Vigo was ranked 13th). The Vikings lost 15-5 to the Cadets on Wednesday. The pitching woes were uncharacteristic for the Vikings, who until this game were averaging 3.23 runs allowed.
Briley Jones made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 1-for-3 with two runs and one triple. That triple marked the first that she has hit this season.
Meanwhile, it may have taken eight innings to finish the job, but Edgewood ultimately got the result they hoped for on Wednesday. They walked away with a 6-3 victory over Indian Creek.
ALLY BLAND made a splash no matter where she played. She struck out 13 batters over eight innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off five hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in 16 consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 4-for-5 with two RBI, one run, and one double. That's the most hits she has posted since back in May of 2024.
In other batting news, ELLA SPROUL was incredible, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with one home run, two RBI, and one double. Another player making a difference was JAYDEN STEPHENS, who went 1-for-3 with one run and one RBI.
Edgewood has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won eight of their last nine matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 16-5 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.2 runs on average over those games. As for West Vigo, they moved to 20-2 with that defeat, which also ended their five-game winning streak.
Both West Vigo and Edgewood just can't seem to miss. The Vikings have been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 12 hits per game. However, it's not like Edgewood struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 4.6 hits.
