Preview: Salpointe Catholic Lancers vs. Brophy College Prep Broncos

The Salpointe Catholic Lancers will head out on the road to face off against the Brophy College Prep Broncos at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in Arizona (Salpointe Catholic is ranked 12th, while Brophy College Prep is ranked tenth).

Salpointe Catholic was not the first on the board last Friday, but they got there more often. They came out on top against Saguaro by a score of 21-14. The victory made it back-to-back wins for Salpointe Catholic.

Salpointe Catholic can attribute much of their success to Taylor Nagore, who rushed for 69 yards and two touchdowns on only seven carries, and also threw for 117 yards and a touchdown on only 11 passes.

Another reason for the win was Salpointe Catholic's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for four sacks. Saguaro's QB won't forget Orlando Gonzalez anytime soon given Gonzalez sacked him four times.

Meanwhile, Brophy College Prep had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 17.5 points), and they went ahead and made it three on Friday. They blew past Mountain Pointe 44-7 on the road. The result was nothing new for Brophy College Prep, who have now won four contests by 25 points or more so far this season.

Charlie McGinnis continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, throwing for 246 yards and four touchdowns, while also punching in a touchdown on the ground. Another player making a difference was Harrison Chambers, who gained 161 total yards and a touchdown.

Special teams played a big role in the game for Brophy College Prep, adding 14 points to the final score. All those points came courtesy of Connor Furey: he added nine points with three field goals, and another five kicking extra points.

Their wins bumped Salpointe Catholic to 8-1 and Brophy College Prep to 7-2.

Friday's game might be decided on the ground as these two are both standouts in the run game. Salpointe Catholic has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 215 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Brophy College Prep struggles in that department as they've been averaging 169.1 per game. It's looking like Friday's contest might have some serious battles in the trenches.
