Softball Recap: Anzar Hawks vs. St. Francis Sharks
Anzar extended their losing streak (dating back to last season) to 14 on Wednesday, dropping them down to 0-6. They came up short against the St. Francis Sharks, falling 10-1. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Sharks this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 6-1 back in March.
As for St. Francis, they have been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 9-4 record this season. The result was nothing new for St. Francis, who have now won seven contests by six runs or more so far this season.
For St. Francis' part, Valerie Ballesteros was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 16 batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned run off seven hits (and only one walk). Ballesteros has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in nine consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of her five plate appearances with one run, one double, and one RBI.
In other batting news, Bella Vargas and Sophia Madrigal did most of the damage at the plate: Vargas went a perfect 4-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI, while Madrigal got on base in all four of her plate appearances with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run. Those four hits gave Vargas a new career-high. Talia Moakler also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.
While Anzar had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
