Softball Recap: Shaker Sets Scoring Season-High Against Albany

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Shaker). Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Albany Falcons a 14-0 shutout on Wednesday. The win continues a trend for the Bison in their matchups with the Falcons: they've now won seven in a row.

Hannah Hipwell made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out 11 over six innings pitched. She has been consistent : she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in six consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 3-for-4. That stolen base was her first of the season.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Ruby Szemplinski, who fired off two home runs and four RBI while going 2-for-5. Another player making a difference was Sarah Syden, who scored two runs while getting on base in four of her five plate appearances.

Shaker was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .400. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their batting average total in three consecutive games.

Shaker's victory bumped their record up to 7-1. As for Albany, they are on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-5.

We've got plenty of inter-league action coming up soon. Shaker is set to challenge their familiar foe Ballston Spa at 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Bison 2, the Scotties 3.4) so any runs scored will be well earned. Meanwhile, Albany will face off against rival Saratoga Springs at 4:15 p.m. on Monday.
