San Marcos and Carlsbad are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2015, but likely not for long. The Knights will face off against the Lancers at 3:30 p.m. on Friday. Carlsbad took a loss in their last match and will be looking to turn the tables on San Marcos, who comes in off a win.
The home team had won the previous three meetings between San Marcos and Bonita Vista, and San Marcos kept the tradition alive. The Knights came out on top against the Barons by a score of 5-2 on Friday.
Charlotte Shelton looked comfortable as she tossed four innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks in ten consecutive appearances.
At the plate, San Marcos saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Emily Lew, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base and one run. Another was Vai Escamilla, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with one stolen base and one RBI.
San Marcos hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. They are 6-2 when they post two or more strikeouts.
Carlsbad couldn't beat Torrey Pines on Thursday even though they stacked four runs on them in the seventh inning. The Lancers fell just short of the Falcons by a score of 6-4.
San Marcos has been performing well recently as they've won nine of their last 12 contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 10-7 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 6.5 runs over those games. As for Carlsbad, their defeat dropped their record down to 2-9.
San Marcos' speedy runners might be the difference in Friday's game. The Knights have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 2.9 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Carlsbad, though, as they've been averaging only 0.6 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will San Marcos continue to outrun the ball?
San Marcos came out on top in a nail-biter against Carlsbad in their previous matchup back in February of 2024, sneaking past 5-3. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Knights since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
