Basketball Recap: La Cueva Bears vs. Piedra Vista Panthers

The La Cueva Bears waltzed into their matchup on Friday with three straight wins but they left with four. They took down Piedra Vista 43-28. That result was just more of the same for these two, as La Cueva also won the last time the pair played back in February of 2023.

La Cueva found their leader in underclassman Jordyn Dyer, who dropped a double-double on 20 points and 18 rebounds. Dyer is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last five games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Ally Lyle, who scored two points along with four steals.

Despite the loss, Piedra Vista still got an impressive performance from Tyra Holyan, who scored 15 points along with seven rebounds. That was a full 53.6% of Piedra Vista's points, marking the third time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points.

La Cueva pushed their record up to 14-3 with that win, which was their sixth straight at home. As for Piedra Vista, they have been struggling recently as they've lost four of their last five games, which put a noticeable dent in their 9-9 record this season.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. La Cueva will take on the Matadors at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Sandia knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past four contests -- so hopefully the Bears like a good challenge. As for Piedra Vista, they will look to defend their home court on Tuesday against the Mustangs at 6:00 p.m. Hopefully West Mesa focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up ten on Saturday.
