Basketball Recap: Coahoma County Picks Up Fourth Consecutive Victory

Coahoma County came tearing into Tuesday's contest with three straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 20.7 points) and they left with even more momentum. They snuck past the Grenada Chargers with a 46-42 win. Given the Red Panthers' advantage in MaxPreps' Mississippi basketball rankings (they are ranked 35th, while the Chargers are ranked 205th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Coahoma County was led to victory by Caleb Hearns and Zech Smith. Hearns dropped a double-double on ten points and 13 boards, while Smith posted 11 points along with five boards and four steals. Hearns has been hot for a while, having posted nine or more boards the last 13 times he's played. Tarrius Weeks was another key player, putting up four points and seven rebounds.

Despite the loss, Grenada had strong showings from Zayion Cotton, who had seven points, and Garan Edwards, who put up seven points and 13 rebounds.

Coahoma County's victory was their fifth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 18-4. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 54.0 points per game. As for Grenada, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 2-14.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Coahoma County will take on Independence at 7:30 p.m. on January 14th. As for Grenada, they are taking a road trip to challenge South Panola at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
