Basketball Game Preview: Liberty Minutemen vs. Staunton River Golden Eagles

Liberty has won nine straight games at home (dating back to last season), while Staunton River has won nine straight on the road, but those streaks won't matter much on Wednesday. The Liberty Minutemen will host the Staunton River Golden Eagles at 7:00 p.m. Liberty is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 59.8 points per game this season.

Liberty is headed into the match after thoroughly thrashing Rustburg: they outscored them in every quarter. Liberty was the clear victor by a 53-28 margin over Rustburg on Friday. Given the Minutemen's advantage in MaxPreps' Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 34th, while the Red Devils are ranked 220th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Shania Brown was her usual excellent self, dropping a double-double on 23 points and 18 rebounds. Her evening made it three games in a row in which she has scored at least ten points. Moriah Tate was another key player, going 6 of 12 en route to 14 points and four steals.

Liberty was working as a unit and finished the game with 14 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Rustburg only posted one assist.

Meanwhile, Staunton River's undefeated season came to an end after 12 games on Tuesday. They were beaten by Fleming 64-33. The contest marked the Golden Eagles' lowest-scoring game so far this season.

Liberty's win bumped their record up to 11-0. As for Staunton River, their defeat was their first of the season and makes their record 12-1.

Liberty beat Staunton River 49-37 in their previous matchup back in January of 2024. Does Liberty have another victory up their sleeve, or will Staunton River turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
