Baseball Game Preview: Springfield Blue Devils vs. Clay Eagles

For the second straight game, Springfield will face off against Clay. The Blue Devils will host the Eagles at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Springfield has given up an average of 9.4 runs per game this season, but Tuesday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

Springfield fell victim to Clay and their airtight pitching crew on Monday. They lost 11-0 to the Eagles. The defeat continues a trend for the Blue Devils in their meetings with the Eagles: they've now lost six in a row.

For Clay's part, Bryce Besgrove made a splash while hitting and pitching. He kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out 11 over five innings pitched. Besgrove has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two hits in seven consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 1-for-2 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double.

In other batting news, Clay got a massive performance out of Chase Vriezelaar, who went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and one run. Those three RBI gave Vriezelaar a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Alex Goetz, who went 2-for-3 with two runs and one triple.

Clay always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .552. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Springfield only posted an OBP of .158.

The victory was the 11th in a row for Clay, bringing their record up to 14-4. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.1 runs on average over those games. As for Springfield, their loss dropped their record down to 5-10.
