Baseball Recap: Homestead Drops Season-High Score on Pioneer

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Homestead). Everything went their way against Pioneer on Thursday as Homestead made off with a 13-5 win. The victory was some much needed relief for Homestead as it spelled an end to their three-game losing streak.

Jayden Duong and Clay Bussey made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Duong struck out seven batters over five innings while giving up three earned (and two unearned) runs off ten hits (and not a single walk). Meanwhile, Bussey tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Those seven strikeouts gave Duong a new career-high. At the plate, Duong scored two runs and stole Two bases. while going 3-for-3, while Bussey went 1-for-3 with one triple, one stolen base, and one run. Homestead is 2-1 when Duong posts two or more stolen bases, but 2-3 otherwise.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Drew Hamburger, who scored three runs and stole a base while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances. The dominant performance gave him a new career-high in runs. The team also got some help courtesy of Andrew Sun, who scored two runs and stole Two bases. while going 1-for-4.

The win got Homestead back to even at 4-4. As for Pioneer, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 3-3.

Homestead and Pioneer could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps California Rankings. Homestead (ranked 448th) will meet Bellarmine College Prep (ranked 110th) at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. Similarly, Pioneer will face off against Los Altos at 4:00 p.m. on Friday down 265 places (308 vs. 43).
