Basketball Recap: Green City Gophers vs. Canton Tigers

The Green City Gophers had already won four in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 32.8 points), and they went ahead and made it five on Wednesday. They walked away with a 54-47 win over Canton. That's another feather in the cap for Green City, who also won these teams' last head-to-head.

Green City's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Xander Salas led the charge by scoring 29 points along with three steals. Salas has been hot recently, having posted 17 or more points the last four times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Asher Buggs-Tipton, who scored 15 points along with six rebounds and five assists.

Despite the loss, Canton still got an impressive performance from Preston Brewer, who dropped a double-double on 25 points and 11 rebounds. Brewer hasn't dropped below 15 points for four straight games. Tyler Frazier was another key contributor, scoring seven points along with five rebounds and two steals.

Green City is on a roll lately: they've won ten of their last 11 matches, which provided a nice bump to their 16-2 record this season. As for Canton, their defeat dropped their record down to 14-6.

Green City will head out on the road to face off against the Mustangs at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Linn County is still on the hunt for that elusive first 'W'. As for Canton, they will be playing at home against the Raiders at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
