Baseball Recap: Oxford Prep Wins Going Away Against Vance County

Oxford Prep had to skate by with only a two-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the 20-run drubbing they dealt Vance County on Friday. The Oxford Prep Griffins put the hurt on the Vance County Vipers with a sharp 20-0 win. The Griffins have beaten the Vipers the last five times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Vipers has come to flipping the script.

Tanner Abbott made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out eight batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit (and not a single walk). That's the most strikeouts he has posted since back in March of 2024. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring three runs and stealing a base while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Jayce Elliott, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with three runs, four RBI, and one triple. The dominant performance gave him a new career-high in RBI. Another player making a difference was Gage Hobgood, who scored three runs and stole a base while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.

Oxford Prep always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .765. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Vance County only posted an OBP of .111.

Oxford Prep's record is now 3-0. As for Vance County, they are on a 21-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-3.

Looking ahead, Oxford Prep will head out on the road to take on Voyager Academy at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Voyager Academy will roll in looking for their fourth straight victory, something Oxford Prep surely won't give up without a fight. As for Vance County, they will be playing at home against Durham School of the Arts at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Durham School of the Arts is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.2 runs per game this season.
