Baseball Recap: Gloucester Drops Season-High Score on Phoebus

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Gloucester). They put the hurt on the Phoebus Phantoms with a sharp 23-5 win on Thursday. With that victory, the Dukes brought their scoring average up to 6.5 runs per game.

Landon Morris made a splash no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching 1.1 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than one walk in five consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 3-for-6 with one run, one double, and one RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Grayson Shield, who went a perfect 5-for-5 with five runs, two stolen bases, and three doubles. Those five hits gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Hayden Simmons, who got on base in four of his six plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and four RBI.

Gloucester was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .600. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their batting average total in four consecutive matches.

Gloucester's win was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 13-4. The road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.7 runs over those games. As for Phoebus, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost eight of their last nine games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 3-12 record this season.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Gloucester will welcome Manor at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. As for Phoebus, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Menchville at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
