Basketball Recap: Taft Extends Winning Streak to Three

Taft had won two straight games and Gabriela Gonzalez did her part to make it three on Wednesday. The Taft Eagles escaped with a win against the Westinghouse Warriors by the margin of a single free throw, 42-41 thanks in part to Gonzalez, who went 8 of 18 en route to 29 points. Those 29 points gave her a new career-high.

The team also got some help courtesy of Abigail Vancil, who posted eight points and 12 rebounds. She is on a roll when it comes to boards, as she's now pulled down ten or more in the last three games she's played.

Westinghouse's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Amariyae Ervin, who dropped a double-double on 17 points and 14 rebounds. That was a full 41.5% of Westinghouse's points, marking the fifth time in a row she's scored more than a third of the team's points. Jamilah Jackson was another key player, putting up 15 points along with eight boards and five steals.

Taft's win ended a three-game drought at home and bumped them up to 9-15. As for Westinghouse, they dropped their record down to 9-11 with the defeat, which was their seventh straight on the road dating back to last season.

Taft didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next match, a 51-42 victory against Payton College Prep on the 24th. Westinghouse has also already played their next game, a 59-45 win against Simeon on the 24th.
