Basketball Recap: Dynamic Duo of Eva Villarreal and Madison Borjas Lead Mcallen Memorial to Victory

McAllen Memorial had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 23 points) and they went ahead and made it three on Tuesday. They walked away with a 47-35 win over the McAllen Bulldogs. Given the Mustangs' advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 305th, while the Bulldogs are ranked 658th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Leading McAllen Memorial to victory were Madison Borjas and Eva Villarreal. Borjas posted 26 points and five steals, while Villarreal dropped a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds. Villarreal is also on a roll when it comes to blocks, as she's now posted two or more in the last 17 games she's played. Another player making a difference was Arissa Garcia, who put up no points along with seven boards and six steals.

McAllen Memorial smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive rebounds in six consecutive matchups.

McAllen's defeat came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Miller Richey, who had eight points and 14 rebounds. Richey continues to improve, besting her previous point total in each of the last three games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Dariana Luna, who scored eight points and 13 boards.

McAllen Memorial's record now sits at 26-11. As for McAllen, they have been struggling recently as they've lost four of their last five contests, which has put a noticeable dent in their 18-17 record this season.

McAllen Memorial has already played their next game, a 46-40 victory against Lopez on the 11th. McAllen does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
