Basketball Recap: Cotopaxi Takes a Loss

Cotopaxi has relied on a stalwart defense averaging 25.94 points allowed per game, but that average took a hit on Friday. They were beaten by the Springfield Longhorns 56-23. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest loss the Pirates have suffered since March 1, 2024.

When it comes to explaining why Cotopaxi lost, don't look at Hayden Eggleston. Despite the final result, she posted five points in addition to six boards and five steals. Eggleston is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed three or more in each of the last 14 games she's played.

Leading Springfield to victory were Cobi Mackey and Jersey Speck. Mackey shot 4-for-6 from downtown and dropped a double-double with 16 points and 12 steals, while Speck en route to 15 points along with eight steals and five rebounds. Springfield is 13-1 when Mackey posts five or more steals, but 2-3 otherwise. Dakota Reid was another key player, putting up eight points and seven boards.

Cotopaxi's defeat dropped their record down to 12-6. As for Springfield, they pushed their record up to 15-4 with the victory, which was their fourth straight on the road.

Cotopaxi has already played their next matchup, a 45-23 win against Lake County on the 22nd. As for Springfield, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 49-48 loss against Swink on the 22nd.
