Baseball Recap: Mullen Comes Up Short

Mullen extended their losing streak to four on Thursday, dropping their season record down to 5-7 in the process. They took a 7-2 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Grandview Wolves. If the Mustangs were looking for revenge after losing 6-4 to the Wolves when the teams met back in April of 2024, then they'll just have to keep looking.

Mullen got a good showing from Austin Stanford, who tossed 2.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Stanford is becoming a predictor of the Mustangs' success: when he allows at most one hit the team is 2-1 (and 3-6 when he doesn't).

On the hitting side, Thomas Stewart was cooking despite his team's loss, going 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and one run.

As for Grandview, the win was the third in a row for them, bringing their record up to 12-3. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.0 run on average over those games.

On Grandview's side, Justin Dean spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on five hits and racked up six Ks. Dean has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Chase Chapman, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases, two runs, and one triple.

While Mullen had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
