Preview: St. Bernard's Crusaders vs. St. Vincent de Paul Mustangs
The St. Bernard's Crusaders will be playing in front of their home fans against the St. Vincent de Paul Mustangs at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. Both teams come into the contest bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Last Friday, it was close, but St. Bernard's sidestepped Segerstrom for a 28-26 win.
St. Bernard's' win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Wyatt Simoni, who rushed for 142 yards and two touchdowns. The team also got some help courtesy of Michael Manzi, who picked up 104 receiving yards and a touchdown.
St. Bernard's' defense stepped up as well, laying out the QB four times. Leading the way was Simoni and his two sacks.
Meanwhile, you can't lose the match if you win every quarter, and that was precisely St. Vincent de Paul's strategy against Piner on Saturday. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that St. Vincent de Paul blew Piner out of the water with a 54-6 final score. The contest was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 27-6.
St. Vincent de Paul found their leader in underclassman Mason Caturegli, who rushed for 230 yards and two touchdowns while picking up 14.4 yards per carry. Caturegli was no stranger to the big play, turning on the jets for a run that went for 52 yards. Another player making a difference was Gabe Casanovas, who threw for 151 yards and four touchdowns.
St. Bernard's has been no stranger to the win column this season, as they've started out with wins in five of their first six games, giving them a 5-1 record. As for St. Vincent de Paul, their win was their fourth straight at home, bumping their overall record up to 5-1.
St. Bernard's came up short against St. Vincent de Paul when the teams last played back in October of 2022, falling 35-24. Will St. Bernard's have more luck at home instead of on the road?
