Softball Recap: Madison Comes Up Short

Madison suffered their closest defeat since May 2, 2024 on Wednesday. They fell just short of the Geneva Eagles by a score of 3-1. The Blue Streaks were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Eagles earlier this season, when they won 7-6.

Kara Mekulsia spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and two unearned) runs on four hits and racked up 13 Ks. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts any time she's pitched this season.

On the hitting side, Madison saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Hannah Welch, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one double. Another was Gianna LaMarco, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with one stolen base and one run.

Madison has traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 10-4 record this season. As for Geneva, their win bumped their record up to 9-10.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Madison will challenge Lakeside at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Geneva, they will square off against West Geauga at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Eagles' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Wolverines have averaged an impressive 7.9 runs per game this season.
