The nation's top juniors and sophomores will compete this week in the Area Code Games in Long Beach with others also playing in the Under Armour and Aflac All-American Games.
The long summer baseball season winds down this month with two All-American Games and the Area Code Games, all scheduled to be played in the next two weeks.
The Area Code Games get underway Wednesday with eight teams and nearly 160 players competing in a weeklong tournament in front of scouts from every major college and MLB team in the country.
On Aug. 8, the Under Armour All-American Game gets underway with a 1:05 p.m. start at Wrigley Field. The following week, Aug. 16, the Aflac All-American Game is set for PETCO Park in San Diego.
Following is a closer look at the players selected to play in each of the three events.
Under Armour All-American Game
The Under Armour All-American Game is set for Aug. 8 at Wrigley Field in Chicago and features 36 of the nation’s top players.
The Baseball Factory team features two of the nation’s top pitching prospects in Drew Cisco of Wando and A.J. Cole of Oviedo. Cisco has impressed all season long with his competitiveness at several showcases this summer. He was also an all-state pick in South Carolina and averages about 88-92 mph on his fastball.
Cole, meanwhile, could be the top high school pitcher chosen in next year’s MLB draft. The 6-foot-5 right-hander has hit 96 mph on his fastball and has good athleticism.
The Baseball Factory squad also has an outstanding group of infielders, led by Yordy Cabrera of Lakeland and Zach Alvord of South Forsyth, Ga., in the middle and Kevin Koziol of Brother Rice at first base.
Team One features one of the top two-way players in the nation in Stetson Allie of St. Edward. A hard-hitting third baseman, Allie might also be the hardest thrower in the nation as he has hit 99 mph on his fastball. Also expected to see time on the mound is Jameson Taillon of The Woodlands, who along with Cole is expected to be among the first high school pitchers selected in the draft in 2010. Team One is also particularly strong in the outfield where the speedy Reggie Golden of Wetumpka and Austin Wilson of Harvard Westlake will roam.

Aflac All-American Game
The Aflac All-American Game is set for Aug. 16 at PETCO Park in San Diego and will feature 40 of the top underclassmen in the country.
The contest also has 14 players who will compete in the Under Armour game, including Stetson Allie, Zach Alvord, Yordy Cabrera, Chevez Clarke, A.J. Cole, Reggie Golden, Trey Griffin, Jacoby Jones, DeAndre Smelter and Karsten Whitson for the East and Kevin Gausman, Brian Ragira, Jameson Taillon and Austin Wilson for the West.
The Aflac game could also be the last high school performance for Bryce Harper of Las Vegas, who recently completed his sophomore year but has enrolled at Southern Nevada College with plans to get his GED and make himself eligible for the 2010 draft. Harper was a MaxPreps All-American and was named national player of the year by Baseball America.
Last year’s contest was pitching dominated and that could be the case again this year. The East looks particularly loaded with Allie and Cole in the same lineup along with Cameron Bedrosian of East Coweta, Kaleb Cowart of Cook County and Karsten Whitson of Chipley. Bedrosian is the son of former MLB Cy Young Award winner Steve Bedrosian while Whitson is the nephew of former MLB pitcher Ed Whitson. Cowart, meanwhile, was the MVP of the Perfect Game 17U National Championships in Fort Myers in July.

Area Code Games
The Area Code Games are set to begin Wednesday and run through Aug. 10 at Blair Field in Long Beach, Calif.
The annual tournament features eight teams comprised of approximately 160 of the top juniors and sophomores in the country. Last year Texas brought a star-studded group to Long Beach and captured first place in the event with a 4-1 overall record. Three players from last year’s Texas team, Randal Grichuk, Slade Heathcott and Shelby Miller, were chosen in the first round of the 2009 MLB draft.
This year, Texas could be the favorite again although only one player, pitcher Zach Lee of McKinney, returns on this year’s Rangers team. Lee is a 6-4 right hander who has already committed to play football at LSU next year.
Here’s a look at each of the eight teams participating in this week’s event.
Chicago White Sox
The White Sox have three outstanding young pitchers in Broken Arrow’s Archie Bradley, Owasso’s Dylan Bundy and Lawrence’s Albert Minnis. Bradley played for Muskogee last year, but transferred this summer when his mother became the assistant principal at Broken Arrow. Also an outstanding quarterback, Bradley is one of the top recruits from the class of 2011.
Bundy, meanwhile, played at Sperry last year and was named the Gatorade state player of the year in Oklahoma after striking out over 180 batters and pitching four no-hitters. He has reportedly transferred to Owasso for next season.
Minnis played his junior year at Lawrence, Kan., after playing at Park Hill as a sophomore. All he did was win area MVP honors and lead Lawrence to a state championship.
Bundy, Bradley and Minnis, along with Justin O’Conner of Muncie, Ind., and Jackson Laumann of Boone County, Kent., will make their second appearance at the Area Code Games. O’Connor might be the top dual threat for the White Sox as he belted 19 home runs last year and also struck out 101 batters for Muncie.

Milwaukee Brewers Blue
The Blue team is comprised of players mostly from Southern California and will include four players who competed in last year’s games. Christian Lopes of Valencia, a sophomore who made the games last year following his freshman year, may be the top player to watch for the Blue. Lopes was a league MVP and a MaxPreps Sophomore All-American after belting 15 home runs last year.
Also back are Adam Plutko of Glendora, Austin Wilson of Harvard Westlake and Jake Hernandez of Los Osos. Wilson, considered one of the top outfield prospects in the class of 2010, may not be available for the entire week since he has also been selected to play in the Under Armour All-American Game at Wrigley Field on August 8.
The Blue have an impressive infield anchored by Lopes or Tony Wolters of Rancho Buena Vista in the middle, Christian Yelich of Westlake at first base, and Travis Harrison of Tustin at third base.

Milwaukee Brewers Gray
The Brewers Gray also represent players from California, mostly from the northern part of the state. David Armendariz of Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks is the only returning player from last year. He was a member of the Brewers Blue in 2008.
The Gray appear to have an outstanding pitching staff, anchored by Cody Buckel of Royal, Brandon Brennan of Capistrano Valley, Ryon Healy of Crespi and Dylan Covey of Maranatha. Brennan is also scheduled to play in the Under Armour game in Chicago.
The rest of the offense gets a lift from the Archbishop Mitty duo of Alex Balog at first base and James Roberts at shortstop. Elk Grove’s Jake Rodriguez, a MaxPreps junior All-American is listed as one of the team’s catchers, although he played shortstop for the Thundering Herd last season.

Oakland Athletics
Although representing mostly the Southeast, the Athletics do have five California players on the team, including Jake Stassi of Yuba City, whose brother Max was drafted by the Athletics, and Brett and Bobby Geren of San Ramon Valley, whose father Bob Geren is the current manager of the MLB Oakland Athletics.
Although the Athletics team does not tap into some of the great talent in Georgia, Alabama or Florida (many of whom are playing in the Under Armour game the same weekend), there are some members of the Sunshine State who should stand out. Thomas Dorminy of Alonso was the MaxPreps junior of the year after leading Alonso to the 6A state title in Florida. Meanwhile Drew Doty of Gaither was one of the top players in the Tampa area last season.
Another name to watch is D’Monte Grissom, son of former MLB outfielder Marquis Grissom, who played at Whitewater, Ga., last season.

Washington Nationals
The Nationals have just two returning players from last year’s event, but one of them, Josh Sale of Bishop Blanchet, was a big hit.
Sale, a MaxPreps junior All-American, hit for the cycle in one game during last year’s Area Code Games and gives the Nationals one of the top bats in the tournament. Jacoby Almaraz, a first baseman from Lady Bird Johnson High School in Texas, is the other returning player.

Texas Rangers
While Lee is likely the featured attraction among the starting pitchers for the Rangers, the squad has depth. Toller Boardman of Bellaire, one of the top pitchers in the class of 2011 will make the trip along with John Simms of College Park, who was the Greater Houston Pitcher of the Year last season.
Matt Lipka of McKinney anchors the defense at shortstop. He’ll also participate in the Aflac game the following week in San Diego. Daniel Mengden of Westside, the district MVP along with Boardman, is the team’s top catcher.

Cincinnati Reds
The Reds cover most of the Southwest along with Nevada, Utah and Hawaii. The offense could be explosive with Taylor Lindsey of Desert Mountain (18 home runs), DJ Peterson of Gilbert (15) Jacob Brugman of Desert Vista (15) and Kris Bryant of Bonanza (9) all in the lineup.
The Reds also have one of the nation’s top infielders in Marcus Littlewood, who was a member of Team USA last year.
The pitching includes Marco Gonzales of Rocky Mountain (Colo.) and Adam Duke of Spanish Fork (Utah), each of whom helped their teams win state championships.

New York Yankees
The Yankees draw heavily from the New England area and Pennsylvania and Ohio. Pitching will not be a problem for New York, which has Suffern’s Robbie Aviles and Walsh Jesuit’s Tyler Skulina on the roster. Aviles is also selected to pitch in the Aflac All-American game while Skulina was the state MVP in Ohio.
