Soccer Recap: Mattoon Comes Up Short

After flying high against Taylorville on Thursday, Mattoon came back down to earth. The Greenwave fell 3-1 to the Mt. Zion Braves on Saturday. The result was an unpleasant reminder to Mattoon of the 3-0 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in October of 2024.

Mattoon's loss was their first in the conference, dropping their conference record down to 3-1 and their overall record down to 6-4-2. As for Mt. Zion, they moved to 7-4 with that victory, which also ended their four-game losing streak.

Looking ahead, Mattoon will welcome Richland County at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Mt. Zion, they will face off against Charleston at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Mt. Zion will be up against Charleston's rather soft defense (which has allowed 3.55 goals per match), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance.
