Basketball Recap: Wimberley Falls Despite Big Games from Gavin Olmer and Paul Gumbert-Mendoza

Wimberley and La Marque squared off in some playoff action on Friday, but Wimberley had to settle for second. They took a hard 74-60 fall against the La Marque Cougars. While losing is never fun, the Texans can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 250th, while the Cougars are ranked 119th).

Wimberley's defeat shouldn't obscure the performances of Paul Gumbert-Mendoza, who shot 47% from the field en route to 17 points and eight assists, and Gavin Olmer, who dropped a double-double with 13 points and ten rebounds. Gumbert-Mendoza's evening made it 15 games in a row in which he has scored at least 16 points. Kaegen Davis was another key player, putting up seven points.

Wimberley moved to 27-10 with that loss, which also ended their three-game winning streak. Those victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 72.7 points over those games. As for La Marque, the victory was the 16th in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 39-2.

Wimberley does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for La Marque, a feisty cat fight will be fought as La Marque Cougars challenge Wheatley Wildcats at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. They will need to watch out since Wheatley has now posted at least 55 points every time they've taken the court this season.
