Basketball Recap: Bennard Anson's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Sumner over Clearwater

Sumner was the 58-57 winner over Clearwater when they last played one another back in December of 2024, but their luck changed this time around. The Stingrays fell just short of the Tornadoes by a score of 55-52 on Friday.

Sumner's defeat came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Bennard Anson, who shot 43% from the field on his way to 20 points and four steals. With that strong performance, Anson is now averaging an impressive 2.2 steals per game. Another player making a difference was Karson Coleman, who went 6-for-8 to rack up 15 points and eight rebounds.

Clearwater's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Kris Foote, who shot 78% from the field en route to 17 points in addition to six boards and five blocks. Ariyel Tirado was another key player, putting up 12 points along with five rebounds and four steals.

Sumner's loss dropped their record down to 2-2. As for Clearwater, they have started the season off flawlessly and has a 2-0 record to show for it.

Sumner didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 74-59 win against Gulf on the 29th. As for Clearwater, they have also already played their next contest, a 62-52 victory against Gulliver Prep on the 29th.
