Preview: Progreso Red Ants vs. San Diego Vaqueros
Progreso is 0-2 against San Diego since October of 2021 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The Progreso Red Ants will be playing at home against the San Diego Vaqueros at 7:30 p.m. Progreso comes in still looking for their first win of the season.
Progreso fell victim to Falfurrias' stalwart defense on Friday and couldn't make it onto the board. They had to suffer through a rough 53-0 loss at the hands of the Fightin' Jerseys.
Meanwhile, San Diego beat Lyford 31-20 on Friday. The victory made it back-to-back wins for San Diego.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead San Diego to victory, but perhaps none more so than Jayden Lozano, who threw for 147 yards and two touchdowns. The team also got some help courtesy of Ronnie White, who rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown on only 13 carries.
San Diego's defense stepped up as well, laying out the QB four times. The heavy lifting was done by Ryan Casas and Andres Lopez who racked up four sacks between them.
Progreso's defeat was their tenth straight on the road (dating back to last season), which dropped their overall record down to 0-7. Those losses could be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they only averaged 0.9 points per game. San Diego has been no stranger to the win column this season, as they've started out with wins in five of their first six games, giving them a 5-1 record.
Progreso took a serious blow against San Diego when the teams last played back in October of 2022, falling 52-0. Thankfully for Progreso, Rj Valerio (who rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown, and also threw for 167 yards and four touchdowns while completing 80% of his passes) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result? There's only one way to find out.
