Two dominant signal callers in Kason Perez and Nathanael Best are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Carlsbad Cavemen/Cavegirls will challenge the Alamogordo Tigers at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, the two teams will really light up the scoreboard.

Carlsbad fought the good fight in their overtime contest against Organ Mountain on Friday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They and the Knights were almost perfectly matched up, but they suffered a 41-40 loss. The Cavemen/Cavegirls were up 21-0 in the second but couldn't hold on to the lead.

Despite their defeat, Carlsbad saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Brock Wright, who rushed for 53 yards and three touchdowns, and also picked up 55 receiving yards, was perhaps the best of all. Wright was no stranger to the big play, lighting up the secondary with a catch that went for 55 yards. Perez was another key passer, throwing for 355 yards and two touchdowns while picking up 11.5 yards per attempt.

Meanwhile, Alamogordo was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their third straight loss. They lost 61-35 to Centennial. While losing is never fun, the Tigers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' New Mexico football rankings (they are ranked 29th, while the Hawks are ranked second).

Despite the defeat, Alamogordo got top-tier performance from Best, who rushed for 142 yards and a touchdown, and also threw for 94 yards and three touchdowns. Best's rushing production has been exceptional recently as that marked his fourth straight game with at least 100 rushing yards dating back to last season. Another player making a difference was Dylan Hergenreder, who rushed for 123 yards and a touchdown.

He was just one part of a punishing run game: Alamogordo was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 311 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've posted since back in October of 2023.

Alamogordo wouldn't let Centennial keep a hold of the ball as they managed to force two fumbles. Alamogordo can thank Ke'Maurion Morrall and Isaac Lara for forcing both of them.

Carlsbad now has a losing record at 3-4. As for Alamogordo, their loss dropped their record down to 1-6.
