Basketball Recap: Robert Fritz's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Freeburg over Civic Memorial

Freeburg lost a heartbreaker to Civic Memorial when they met back in December of 2021, and they left with a heavy heart again on Sunday. The Freeburg Midgets lost to the Civic Memorial Eagles on the road by a 66-49 margin. That's two games in a row now that the Midgets have lost by exactly 17 points.

Freeburg's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Robert Fritz, who dropped a double-double on 13 points and ten boards. That's the most points Fritz has posted since back in November of 2023. The team also got some help courtesy of Jase Brentlinger, who posted ten points and five rebounds.

Adam Ogden was nothing short of spectacular for Civic Memorial: he went 6 of 12 on his way to 18 points in addition to eight assists and seven steals. Another player making a difference was August Frankford, who dropped a double-double on 11 points and 11 boards.

Freeburg's loss dropped their record down to 5-8. As for Civic Memorial, the win was the third in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 8-6.

Freeburg and Civic Memorial could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps Illinois Rankings. Freeburg (ranked 431st) will meet Breese Central (ranked 66th) at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Similarly, Civic Memorial (ranked 223rd) will meet Mascoutah (ranked 104th) at 6:00 p.m. on January 10th.
