Football Recap: Charlestown Takes a Loss

Charlestown dropped down to 6-2 on Friday, ending the team's five-game streak of wins. They were just a hair shy of victory and fell 21-20 to the Salem Lions. Despite 102 more yards than the Lions, the Pirates couldn't convert that extra yardage to scores.

Charlestown's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Jovon Morris, who rushed for 116 yards and one TD on only nine carries. Another passer making a difference was Christian Grayson, who threw for 220 yards and a pair of touchdowns on only 18 passes.

As for Salem, the victory was the third in a row for them, bringing their record up to 4-4. Those wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 39.3 points over those games.

Salem got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Logan Dent out in front who rushed for 101 yards and two scores. Dent is becoming a predictor of the Lions' success: when he posts at least 100 rushing yards the team is undefeated (and 1-4 when he doesn't). Salem also got a significant boost from Caris Moore, who ran away from the competition to the tune of 105 yards.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Charlestown will head out to challenge Eastern at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Pirates will be up against the Musketeers' rather soft defense (which has allowed 38.88 points per contest), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance. As for Salem, they are taking a road trip to face off against West Washington at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
