Softball Recap: Newton Comes Up Short

Parsippany hit Newton with a six-run second inning on Monday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Braves fell just short of the Redhawks by a score of 8-7. The Braves have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Jaida Long spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned (and four unearned) runs on ten hits and racked up nine Ks. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts any time she's pitched this season.

On the hitting side, Newton saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Mackenzie Greenhalgh, who went 2-for-4 with two runs. Jaclyn Vena also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.

Newton now has a losing record of 6-7. As for Parsippany, their victory was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 10-0.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Newton will host Belvidere on Wednesday. As for Parsippany, they will be playing at home against West Morris Mendham at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Minutemen have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 6.89 runs per game on average), something the Redhawks will no doubt try to take advantage of.
