Baseball Game Preview: Westmoreland Eagles vs. Essex Trojans

Westmoreland is 1-9 against Essex since April of 2019 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Tuesday. The Eagles will be playing at home against the Trojans at 5:00 p.m. Westmoreland has given up an average of 11.7 runs per game this season, but Tuesday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

Westmoreland is headed into Tuesday's matchup looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their 21st straight game dating back to last season on Thursday. They lost 16-0 to Rappahannock.

Meanwhile, Essex waltzed into their game on Wednesday with four straight wins... but they left with five. They beat the Red Devils by the very same score they won with in their prior game: 3-1.

Noah Thompson spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned run on two hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in seven consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Essex saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Keion Hence, who went 1-for-2 with two stolen bases. Hence is becoming a predictor of the Trojans' success: when he posts at least two stolen bases the team is undefeated (and 4-6 when he doesn't). Another was Hunter Byrd, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base and one run.

Essex's win was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 11-6. The road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.8 runs on average over those games. As for Westmoreland, their loss dropped their record down to 0-16.
