Baseball Recap: Villa Angela-St. Joseph Starts Season with Win Against Maple Heights

Villa Angela-St. Joseph took care of business in their home opener (and then some) on Wednesday. Their pitchers stepped up to hand the Maple Heights Mustangs a 12-0 shutout. That result was just more of the same for these two, as the Vikings also won the last time the pair played back in May of 2024.

The team relied heavily on John Vuraich, who scored three runs and stole a base while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. Another player making a difference was Max Gembus, who scored a run while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances.

Villa Angela-St. Joseph always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .645. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Maple Heights only posted an OBP of .176.

This is the second loss in a row for Maple Heights and nudges their season record down to 0-2.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Villa Angela-St. Joseph is packing up and heading out for their first away game of the season: they will face off against Lake Catholic at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Maple Heights, they will head out to challenge Euclid at 5:00 p.m. on Friday.
