Excelsior Charter and Academy of Careers & Exploration are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2016, but likely not for long. The Excelsior Charter Eagles will take on the Academy of Careers & Exploration Eagle at 3:15 p.m. on Thursday. The two teams are sauntering into the matchup backed by comfortable wins in their prior games.
Excelsior Charter made up a huge gap compared to their last game against Rim of the World, but they still couldn't quite topple them. Everything went Excelsior Charter's way against Rim of the World on Wednesday as Excelsior Charter made off with a 20-3 victory. The Eagles might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won three games by ten runs or more this season.
Rylie Hunsaker made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and not a single walk). That's the fewest hits she has allowed since back in March of 2024. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and one RBI. That triple marked the first that she hit this season.
In other batting news, Excelsior Charter got a massive performance out of Evangeline Archuleta, who scored two runs while going 3-for-3. Alany Esparza was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 3-for-4.
Excelsior Charter always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .632. The last time their OBP was this high was back in March of 2024.
Meanwhile, Academy of Careers & Exploration made easy work of Samueli Academy on Monday and carried off a 9-1 win. The result was nothing new for the Eagle, who have now won three matchups by eight runs or more so far this season.
Taylor Coffel was incredible, going a perfect 1-for-1 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. That's the most runs she has posted since back in May of 2024. Another player making a difference was Bethany White, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI.
Excelsior Charter is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 5-3-1 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.4 runs over those games. Academy of Careers & Exploration now has a winning record of 5-4-1.
Thursday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Excelsior Charter hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .369. However, it's not like Academy of Careers & Exploration struggles in that department as they've averaged .435. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Excelsior Charter was able to grind out a solid victory over Academy of Careers & Exploration in their previous meeting on March 1st, winning 7-2. Will Excelsior Charter repeat their success, or does Academy of Careers & Exploration have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
