Recap: Cape Hatteras Hurricanes vs. Bear Grass Charter Bears
If the Cape Hatteras Hurricanes were feeling good off their 51-9 takedown of the Northeast Academy For Aerospace and Advanced Tech Griffins last Thursday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. Cape Hatteras took a 48-38 hit to the loss column at the hands of Bear Grass Charter on Tuesday. The result was an unpleasant reminder to Cape Hatteras of the 52-49 defeat they experienced in the two teams' previous head-to-head fixture back in February of 2023.
Cape Hatteras' loss came despite strong showings from Paizley Schultz and Kylie Philips. Schultz scored 18 points along with seven rebounds and five steals, while Philips scored 12 points along with four steals. That's the first time this season that Schultz scored 15 or more points. The team also got some help courtesy of Alyssa Bryan, who scored two points along with five rebounds and two steals.
Bear Grass Charter's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Carolina Harrell led the charge by scoring 17 points along with three steals. Harrell continues to roll, besting her previous point total in each of the last three games she's played. Hylee (Al) Jarrett was another key contributor, scoring 13 points.
Cape Hatteras' loss was their third straight on the road, which bumped their record down to 7-6. As for Bear Grass Charter, they have been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five matches, which provided a nice bump to their 8-5 record this season.
Cape Hatteras will look to defend their home court on Friday against Mattamuskeet at 6:00 p.m. Mattamuskeet comes in on a streak of failing to score more than 23 points in their last six games, a trend the squad is of course eager to reverse. As for Bear Grass Charter, they will head out on the road to challenge Ocracoke at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Ocracoke will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps North Carolina Rankings (they are ranked 568th, while Bear Grass Charter is ranked 273rd).
