League recap: Pima tops Superior to extend winning streak

Pima extended the longest winning streak in VI Section II (8 Man) this week by beating Superior, 60-18. The victory was the fifth in a row for the Roughriders.

Ray was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from 10th to sixth in the league. The Bearcats defeated Cibecue 76-20 earlier in the week.

Fort Thomas's dynamic duo of JR Tessay and Jarvis Cadmus proved tough for Duncan to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Tessay threw for 398 yards and four touchdowns and Cadmus had 150 yards receiving. Cheston Tessay helped Fort Thomas' passing attack out by catching seven balls for 104 yards.

Val Allred made the biggest impact on defense this week as St. David topped Bowie/San Simon. The 5-foot-11 junior pulled down two interceptions.

Cale Merrell was the most productive running back in the league this week. He ran for 208 yards on 36 carries as the Wildkats lost to the Wildkats. Laramie Wolfe also contributed to the rushing game with 102 yards on the ground.

On the ground, Duncan's Merrell has rushed for 1146 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is Jackson Ventrella. The Mesa Prep star has 31 catches for 454 yards.

The marquee game in the league this week will be the clash between Ray and Pima. Willie Jordan's team enters the contest ranked 15th in the state, while the Roughriders ranks third.

Eldon Merrell's team and Fort Thomas played the most hotly contested game in the league this week, with Eldon Merrell's team eventually emerging with a 44-38 victory. Merrell caught two passes for seven yards in the win.
