Basketball Recap: Waccamaw's Win on Saturday Extends Winning Streak to Five

While Waccamaw didn't have the best season last year (they finished 8-17), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. It was close, but they ultimately received the gift of a 51-48 victory from a begrudging Warriors squad. The win was nothing new for they as they're now sitting on five straight.

Leading Waccamaw to victory were Sutton Cooper and AJ Grate. Cooper posted 18 points, while Grate earned eight points along with six boards and six steals. Grate is becoming a predictor of Waccamaw's success: when he posts at least three steals the team is 5-1 (and 2-3 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Connor Hart, who had seven points along with six assists and six boards.

Waccamaw smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive boards in five consecutive matches.

Quamel Grant and Dru Goldsmith certainly did their best on Saturday to avoid the loss. Grant posted 11 points in addition to eight boards and three steals, while Goldsmith put up 13 points. Grant is on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in the last three games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Wyatt Muirheid, who had seven points.

Waccamaw has been performing well recently as they've won six of their last eight contests, which provided a nice bump to their 7-4 record this season. As for Hanahan, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost three of their last four games, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-7 record this season.

After both having extra time off, Waccamaw and Latta will shake off the cobwebs and face off against one another at 8:00 p.m. on January 2, 2025. Waccamaw is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 55.6 points per game this season. Hanahan and Fairfield Central will round out the year against one another at at 12:00 p.m. on Friday.
