Basketball Recap: Varela Beats Sunset for Their Third Straight Win

Varela proved they can win big last Tuesday (they won by 26) and on Friday they proved they can win the close ones too. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 45-43 victory over the Sunset Knights. The win was familiar territory for the Vipers who have now won three matches in a row.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Varela to victory, but perhaps none more so than Alex Perez, who went 6 of 8 on his way to 14 points and six boards. Aaron Reyes was another key player, putting up 13 points and six rebounds.

When it comes to explaining why Sunset lost, don't look at Brandon Luis. Despite the final result, he went 8 for 11 en route to 20 points. The game was Luis' ninth in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Jonathan Clarke, who posted 11 points.

Varela is on a roll lately: they've won six of their last eight contests, which provided a nice bump to their 7-4 record this season. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 57.5 points per game. As for Sunset, their defeat dropped their record down to 6-5.

Varela has already played their next match, a 52-51 loss against Southwest on the 14th. As for Sunset, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 71-52 defeat against TERRA Environmental on the 14th.
