San Marcos and Poway are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2021, but likely not for long. The Knights will be playing in front of their home fans against the Titans at 4:00 p.m. on Friday.
San Marcos managed to slip by Mission Hills the last time these teams faced off, but didn't have those same answers this time around. The Knights lost 9-1 to the Grizzlies on Wednesday.
Mackenzie Hughes was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-3 with one run and one double.
Poway came out on top against Rancho Bernardo on Wednesday thanks in part to the team's impressive six-run first inning. The Titans were the clear victors by a 9-2 margin over the Broncos. The Titans might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won eight matchups by seven runs or more this season.
Mya McGowan made a splash no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out seven batters over four innings while giving up just two earned runs off two hits. McGowan was also big at the plate, going 2-for-5 with two runs and one double. That's the most runs she has posted since back in March.
In other pitching news, Aubrey Stiritz looked comfortable as she pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 11 consecutive appearances.
Back at the plate, Sophia Burmeister was incredible, getting on base in four of her five plate appearances with one home run and three RBI. Another player making a difference was Madison Loper, who got on base in all five of her plate appearances with three RBI and one double.
Poway kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Rancho Bernardo only managed four hits.
Poway has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won six of their last seven contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 17-5 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.3 runs on average over those games. As for San Marcos, they have been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 12-10 record this season.
Friday's matchup will be a test for both teams' pitchers. San Marcos hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .313. However, it's not like Poway struggles in that department as they've averaged .332. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
San Marcos might still be hurting after the 15-1 defeat they got from Poway when the teams last played back in April. Will the Knights have more luck at home instead of on the road? Come back here after the game to get an analysis of the match and other softball content.
