Football Recap: El Modena Vanguards vs. Cypress Centurions
El Modena won the last time they faced Cypress and things went their way on Thursday too. The Vanguards snuck past the Centurions with a 27-22 victory. Given the Vanguards' advantage in MaxPreps' California football rankings (they are ranked 100th, while the Centurions are ranked 263rd) , the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
A big part of El Modena's win came down to the chemistry between Ethan Sorenson and his top target Arnol Correa. Sorenson rushed for 83 yards and one touchdown while Correa rushed for 106 yards and one score on only five carries. The bulk of those rushing yards came from one huge play: a run that gained an incredible 83 yards.

El Modena was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 242 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've posted since back in October of 2024.
El Modena didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. In fact, those interceptions all came courtesy of defensive juggernaut Thomas Sheehan.
Despite the defeat, Cypress saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Garrison Manzanarez picked up 3.5 sacks and made six total tackles. Justin Hall also set a new season-high mark in passing yards with 330. Matt Rodriguez was another key player, picking up 120 receiving yards and one TD.
The victory got El Modena back to even at 5-5. As for Cypress, they are on a seven-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 3-7.
Coming up, El Modena will square off against La Habra at 7:00 p.m. on the 7th. Cypress does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
