League recap: Poudre stuns Fossil Ridge in upset

5A Front Range recap Oct. 23, 2012

The biggest upset of the week belonged to Poudre, who took down 83rd ranked Fossil Ridge, 51-33. Justin Moreng ran for 237 yards in the win.

Fort Collins extended the longest winning streak in 5A Front Range this week by beating Horizon, 20-17. This was the team's fifth consecutive win.

The Sabercats' dynamic duo of Travis Avila and Eric Lanza proved tough for the Impalas to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Avila threw for 415 yards and five touchdowns and Lanza had 187 yards receiving. Connor Rutledge helped Fossil Ridge's passing attack out by catching seven balls for 75 yards.

Jorge Morales made the biggest impact on defense this week as Mountain Range defeated Rocky Mountain. The 5-foot-11 defensive lineman forced two fumbles, recorded one fumble and racked up one sack.

Fossil Ridge's Avila and Corey Peter have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Avila has thrown for 1759 yards this season, while Peter, a 6-foot-4 receiver, has 40 catches for 772 yards. Gabe Gellespie from the Mustangs leads the league in rushing with 616 yards.

A big matchup in the league this week will be when Steve Vecchio's team takes on the Hawks. As it stands, the Sabercats are in fifth, while Horizon is in first.

Fort Collins and Frank Ybarra's team played the most hotly contested game in 5A Front Range this week, with Fort Collins eventually emerging with a 20-17 victory. Caleb Seeton threw for 134 yards and one touchdown and ran for 57 yards in the win.
