Softball Game Preview: Monona Grove Silver Eagles vs. Waunakee Warriors

Monona Grove is on a five-game streak of home losses dating back to last season, and Waunakee a seven-game streak of away losses also dating back to last season. However, someone's due for a change in luck on Thursday. The Monona Grove Silver Eagles will welcome the Waunakee Warriors at 5:00 p.m. Both come into the matchup bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

Last Tuesday, Monona Grove beat DeForest 12-8.

Brooklyn Vanden Branden spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned (and four unearned) runs on nine hits and racked up 11 Ks.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Kyra Killebrew, who scored two runs while going 3-for-3. Another player making a difference was Addison Veith, who scored two runs while going 2-for-4.

Meanwhile, Waunakee hadn't done well against Beaver Dam recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Tuesday. The Warriors skirted past the Golden Beavers 5-3. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Warriors have posted against the Golden Beavers since May 14, 2019.

Waunakee's first victory this season bumped their record up to 1-2. As for Monona Grove, their win (their first of the season) made their record 1-2.

Monona Grove came up short against Waunakee in their previous meeting back in May of 2024, falling 12-8. Can the Silver Eagles avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
