League recap: Chavez extends winning streak with victory over Camelback

Chavez extended the longest winning streak in II Section I this week by beating Camelback, 69-27. The win marks seventh in a row for the the Champions.

Millennium took down Independence 65-7 last week, the largest margin of any game. Brandon Keller threw for 128 yards and one touchdown and ran for 10 yards in the win.

Chavez's dynamic duo of Arturo Macias and Chasyi Bryant proved tough for the Spartans to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Macias threw for 294 yards and six touchdowns and Bryant had 131 yards receiving. Rodrick Griffin helped Chavez's passing attack out by catching one ball for 63 yards.

Jett Robertson was the most productive running back in the league this week. In 18 carries, he ran for 212 yards as Ironwood defeated Camelback. Teammate Jordan Hamilton added to the ground attack by rushing for 21 yards.

Camden Shirey made the biggest impact on defense this week as the Eagles beat Central. The 6-foot-0 senior grabbed one interception and grabbed 2.0 sacks.

6-foot-2 quarterback Macias of the Champions is the league leader in passing yards this season with 1612. He has also thrown 23 touchdowns. On the ground, Ironwood's Robertson has rushed for 1088 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is Kenneth Wright. The Deer Valley star has 28 catches for 552 yards.

The top two teams in II Section I will face off this week when first place Chavez takes on second place Fairfax. Last week, Chavez topped Brandon McNutt's team, while Fairfax bested Kellis.

The top two defenses in the league will face off this season when the Champions take on the Stampede. Chavez has allowed 62 points this season, while Fairfax has given up 63. The Champions allowed 27 points last week as they topped the Spartans.

Chavez led the league in scoring this week after putting up 69 points on Camelback. Macias ran for 12 yards in the win.
