Basketball Recap: Key West Conchs vs. Boyd Anderson Cobras
The Key West Conchs struggled with assists on Friday (the Boyd Anderson Cobras had eight more) and sadly the final score reflected it. Key West's tough 58-36 defeat to the Cobras might stick with them for a while. While losing is never fun, Key West can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 430th, while the Cobras are ranked 205th).
Despite the loss, Key West saw an underclassman step up: DeMarcus Deroche scored 13 points along with eight rebounds and two blocks. Deroche has been hot recently, having posted eight or more rebounds the last four times he's played. Leandro Batista was another key contributor, scoring nine points along with five rebounds.
Mike Nelson had an outrageously good game for Boyd Anderson as he scored 18 points along with five rebounds and two steals. It was the first time this season that Nelson scored 15 or more points. Another player making a difference was Juawayne Walters, who scored eight points along with six rebounds and two steals.
Key West now has a losing record at 10-11. As for Boyd Anderson, their victory bumped their record up to 10-12.
Key West will face off against the Knights at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Boyd Anderson's road trip will continue as they head out to face the Bengals at 7:30 p.m. on February 6th.
