Baseball Recap: West Covina Has No Trouble Against Schurr

West Covina's game last Wednesday was a loss, but they didn't let that memory haunt them on Saturday. They put the hurt on the Schurr Spartans with a sharp 10-2 victory. The Bulldogs not only won on Saturday, but they posted their biggest win since February 18th.

Marcus Mayweather and Robert Melendez made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Mayweather pitched 2.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Meanwhile, Melendez pitched 4.2 innings while giving up just two earned runs off seven hits. West Covina is undefeated when Mayweather allows one or fewer hits, but 8-9 otherwise. At bat, Mayweather scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-5, while Melendez scored two runs and stole two bases while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. Those two stolen bases gave Melendez a new career-high.

In other batting news, Griffey Moncada and Marciano Ramirez did most of the damage at the plate: Moncada scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-5, while Ramirez scored three runs and stole a base while going 3-for-4. Those three hits gave Ramirez a new career-high. Another player making a difference was DiMaggio Beas, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base and one RBI.

West Covina's win bumped their record up to 11-9. As for Schurr, their defeat dropped their record down to 8-11.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. West Covina will take on Rowland at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Bulldogs are facing the Raiders at the right time seeing as the Raiders are stuck on a three-game losing streak. As for Schurr, they are taking a road trip to challenge Montebello at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Oilers will aim to continue their three-game streak of scoring more runs each game than the last.
