Softball Recap: Hampton Comes Up Short

Hampton had lost six straight on the road dating back to last season, but on Tuesday they dropped down to 0-12 to make it seven. They came up short against the University School Buccaneers, falling 20-12. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last eight times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.

Mallory Lamb led a balanced group of hitters, going 4-for-5 with three RBI, one run, and one double. Kiera McKinney also deserves some recognition as she hit her first doubles of the season.

As for University School, their win ended an eight-game drought at home and bumped them up to 5-15. Their hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.

On University School's side, Reece Williams made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She struck out seven batters over seven innings while giving up five earned (and seven unearned) runs off seven hits. That's the most strikeouts Williams has posted over her last seven games. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with four RBI and one run.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Emma Linkous, who got on base in five of her six plate appearances with one home run, five runs, and five RBI. Those five runs gave her a new career-high. Sydney Evans was another key player, going 1-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.

Coming up, Hampton will square off against Elizabethton at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for University School, they will venture away from home to challenge Unaka at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Buccaneers' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Rangers have averaged an impressive 11 runs per game this season.
