Baseball Recap: East Duplin Triumphs

It may have taken eight innings to finish the job, but East Duplin ultimately got the result they hoped for on Monday. They narrowly escaped with a win as the squad sidled past the North Duplin Rebels 5-4. The victory continues a trend for the Panthers in their matchups with the Rebels: they've now won three in a row.

Gavin Holmes was a major factor no matter where he played. On the mound, he pitched three innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off three hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-5. He has become a key player for East Duplin: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 4-5 otherwise.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Colton Holmes, who scored a run and stole a base while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. Calvin Harper was another key player, going 2-for-4 with one stolen base and one RBI.

East Duplin's win bumped their record up to 7-5. As for North Duplin, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 4-5.

Looking ahead, East Duplin will be playing in front of their home fans against South Lenoir at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. As for North Duplin, they will head out to face off against Hobbton at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. North Duplin's pitchers better be ready for this one: Hobbton has averaged an impressive 9.9 runs per game this season.
