Flag Football Game Preview: Xavier College Prep Gators vs. St. Mary's Knights

The Xavier College Prep Gators will take on the St. Mary's Knights at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Xavier College Prep has four straight wins, St. Mary's has three straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

Xavier College Prep is headed in fresh off scoring the most points they have all season. They simply couldn't be stopped on Thursday as they easily beat Westwood 70-0. With that victory, the Gators brought their scoring average up to 36.8 points per game.

Xavier College Prep's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Ana Matuz led the charge by throwing for 289 yards and ten TDs while picking up 12.0 yards per attempt. Matuz is crushing it when it comes to passing touchdowns: she's passed for at least three every time she's taken the field this season. Xavier College Prep's leading receiver Evie Maas was Matuz's top target yet again, picking up 173 receiving yards and four scores.

Another reason for the win was Xavier College Prep's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for four sacks. Isa Ady was particularly dangerous to the passing game, picking up two herself.

Meanwhile, St. Mary's fell victim to Eastmark and their airtight defense on Thursday. They took a 7-0 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Firebirds. While losing is never fun, the Knights can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Arizona flag football rankings (they are ranked 70th, while the Firebirds are ranked 11th).

Xavier College Prep's win bumped their record up to 4-0. As for St. Mary's, their defeat dropped their record down to 0-3.
